1. Use relative domain names
A domain name is a little known important method of optimizing a website for the SERPs (search engine ranking positions). The reason being is that the name itself can be relative to a search term. Let's say that you have a site specializing in pet food, specifically cat food. A site that has a domain name of catfood.com would rank better for the term "cat food" as opposed to a site with a non relative name such as wholesalesupplies.com.
2. Backlinks
Popularity is what drives most search engine results. If a search engine deems your site popular, then the search engine believes that your site is an authority on a specific subject and has credibility. This in turn would rank your site higher in the results pages. So, how does a search engine establish this popularity you ask? Popularity is established through specific one-way backlinks. A one-way backink to your site is basically a vote of confidence from another website. If the site giving you the link is an authority site and has established credibility with the search engines, then it increases your own site's credibility as you received a vote of confidence from a reputable source. The more backlinks your site receives from other similar sites, the more you will rank for a specific term. Eventually, your own site becomes an authority on the subject and you would notice an increase in traffic, pagerank and SERPs.
3. On-Site SEO through META tags
This is very important as your website is constantly being crawled by the search engine spiders. These spiders are also known as robots and crawl your site to determine if there is any new content to display in the results. These spiders also check your site's META tags to determine what keywords you are targeting and what kind of site you have by checking the description tag. I can't stress enough how important it is to have your META tags in order and to have proper keywords and a good general description of your site. One other thing is to include a META ROBOTS "index, follow" tag, which lets the spiders know to index your site and its contents
4. Content is King
Good keyword-rich content is very important as it can move your site up in the rankings. The more your content changes and is updated, the more the spiders crawl your site. It is very important that your content be unique and properly written. I see too many people using duplicate content on their site. This will get your site penalized by the search engines and will have a negative effect on your search rankings.
Proper search engine optimization can take a lot of work and be overwhelming in certain respects. There are lots of different types of strategies and methods that can have positive effects on your search engine rankings. While you most certainly can perform your own optimization, you may wish to consider outsourcing some of the work to an optimization specialist. Either way you decide to proceed on doing the work yourself or not, proper website optimization pays back in the long run with increased traffic, higher pagerank and higher search rankings for your keyword terms.
